This cookbook marked the fifteenth anniversary of the "Build a Better Contest" sponsored by Sutter Home Winery. I can tell you first hand that it is a fabulous contest. I was a contestant in 1998 and won the prize for creativity for my Sauerbraten Burger. The burger has all the elements of classic sauerbraten, plus other ingredients used in German cuisine including crushed gingersnaps, chopped dill pickle, sauerkraut, and spicy brown mustard in the burger patties, a sour cream, dill, and horseradish topping, and served on rye bread with muenster cheese, tomato, and red onion.
When I was a contestant in 1998, the grand prize was $10,000. This year the prize will be $100,000!! It will be held in Chicago in September. If you are a burger aficionado, then show them what you can do! The entries are being accepted now, so get those grills fired up! Go to this link and enter. Follow the entry rules exactly, because they really do toss entries that are not entered as instructed. For some inspiration, find this cookbook to see what has won in the past. Even if you don't enter, it's a great cookbook to have for summer grilling. There are 44 of the most innovative burgers you will ever find! The head judge since the first contest in 1990 is one of my favorite cookbook authors, James McNair. He is the author of over 40 cookbooks and a really nice man! He sent me a signed copy of this book when it was printed in 2005, with a very sweet inscription:
Fire up your grills and enter!
