It's Make-Over Time for The Culinary Cellar!!

My Culinary Cellar looks like a disaster zone.  Since I started this blog two years ago this month, I have tried to keep up with all the new books, gadgets, dishes, and other items I have accumulated for my basement playground.  However, it finally got away from me and now it's time for a make-over.  A big make-over.

I went down the basement stairs and who greets me first but the Pillsbury Doughboy.  He is holding a welcome sign, but I don't know who would feel welcome down here at the moment.

Next I look across the room and see my favorite vintage James Beard bear.  He doesn't look very happy being tossed onto my great-aunt's old rocking chair.

There is an old day bed down here; for what reason I am not sure because no one sleeps down here.  (Although being in a cookbook basement, wouldn't one have delightful "visions of sugarplums" in their sleep?).  Anyway, the bed became just another place to store books.

My beautiful card catalog was piled with books and folders.

Bins of plates and fabric for photos.

I couldn't even open some of the drawers of recipes!

I don't even know what's in those bags..

No more room..

This one is even worse.

And worse...

Can't you hear them groaning?

A few of the dishes.  More are in old dressers and bins.

Way too much on the card catalog.

But wait....!

First shelves and catalog cleared off!

But where did they go??

Piled behind the day bed!

And piled...

And piled...

End of Day One of the Make-Over!!

Whew!  I think this is about all I can handle for today!  Come back tomorrow and see what's next!

  1. Doesn't it feel good to cleanup/sort-out/throw-away all the stuff that collects in your house? It must have been a lot of people's New Year's Resolution because you are the third person I have talked to that is tackling the mess that is their basement (including me!) I hope to be done with mine by the end of this week. And finishing up on converting our old VHS tapes to DVD's--around 100 VHS tapes--most unmarked. Hope to be done with the converting by the end of this week also and then it will take time to do a quick view of each DVD, label what's on each one and categorize on a spreadsheet. But when both tasks are done I will have completed 2 things on my bucket list !

  2. I think it's that time of year, isn't it? Good luck with the tapes, Barb. I need to do the same thing - but one thing at a time! The basement will take more like a month or two, but I am really excited about the project. I should have a basement-warming party when it's all done!

  3. Oh, it may seem a mess to others; but my heart leaps and my eyes open wide as I smile at just the thought of perusing all those beautiful cookbooks ... :)

  5. Mary, I have been smiling ear-to-ear all day thinking of how great it's going to be when it's finally completed!

  6. Good question, Angela! We just keep shifting things around as more is done. The ones I had to move off the first couple shelves had to be stacked up - and up. It's a crazy place at the moment, but I have to keep reminding myself how it will be in a couple months.

  7. Is William ShakesBear spooning with James Bear-d?!

  8. Poor bears both got covered in wood dust and left the basement. ;-)
